Incorporating the 5 Senses to Create a Garden That You Will Love!
One way to create a garden you will love is to incorporate the five senses into your garden design.
One of my very favorite places on earth is the Tennessee/Kentucky area.
I do have many great memories there, but strangely enough, it’s the smell of the place that I find the most intoxicating!
Here in the mountain west, moisture can be hard to find. I love the smell of humidity and that dark, rich dirt. Maybe it’s the farmer in me, but I love it!
These memories have me thinking about creating a garden area that delights the senses! A garden area that you will love to spend time in!
Let’s go through them one at a time and find the plants, flowers, and fixtures that will create a garden you will love.

The first sense to incorporate is, of course, sight!
Plant and flower types
Colors that capture your attention are great places to start. Consider also repeating color patterns that work well together. The types and sizes of flowers should also be taken into consideration.
Adding trees and bushes will create structure, but they should be considered carefully to ensure they fit the space and do not create too much shade in the garden area.
You can also use vines and climbing roses to cover old fences or unsightly areas of the garden, adding an intriguing sight.
Other pleasant visual items include small bridges, figurines, and different-sized pots.
Garden path lights and white flowers, such as moonflowers, are excellent for enhancing the garden at night.
Include wildlife and insects if possible.
My Grandma had a quail mama with a bunch of babies following her, it was awesome!
Deer may destroy your garden, but other animals, such as squirrels, birds, or butterflies, delight the sense of sight and provide eye-catching movement.

The second sense to incorporate in your garden is hearing.
Walking into a garden with beautiful sounds makes a garden a cherished place.
These sounds could include things such as a waterfall, a pond, or even pleasant-sounding wind chimes.
Incorporating a bird bath to attract songbirds may be an excellent way to add sound to a garden.
Creating a DIY fountain or purchasing a small one can add a significant touch to your garden!

Incorporating a sense of smell is a must for a flower garden.
Flowers like roses, peonies, lavender, or hyacinths are excellent to include in your garden.
Certain geraniums emit a citrus scent.
Creeping Thyme or mint can be placed along the path. Stepping on these will release the smell and add invigorating.
Planting these kinds of flowers along the path will be delightful during the day and also in the evening.

Adding the sense of touch to your garden is a delightful extra.
Plants such as ferns, lamb’s ears, and geraniums add an extra splash of fun to your garden.
In addition, sand or large flat stones for a walkway are another option to integrate touch into your garden.
Garden misters are also an option to create a “feeling” garden.

And the last, but certainly not least, of the five senses to add to your garden is taste.
There are numerous options to choose from when incorporating taste into your garden.
These options could include fruit or vegetables.
From there, you could decide in what form you would like to bring them into the garden, such as a tree, bush, vine, or plant.
You can decide if you would like a permanent fixture, such as an apple tree, blackberry bush, or blueberry bush.
Some plants are perennials, such as strawberries or asparagus.
Herbs are also a great addition to any garden, such as chamomile, chives, parsley, or cilantro.
Many options will make your garden complete!

Incorporating the five senses into your garden will ensure that you have a garden you genuinely love.
Planning a garden in this fashion may seem like a bit more work than you initially wanted to put into it, but the result will be a magical place that you and your family will love!
Prayers for your journey,
